Pyrenean Coast to Coast:  June 14 - 20 2008

As part of my training for the Etape du Tour this seemed more than appropriate, coming just two weeks before the big day. Run by Pyractif, who specialise in Pyrenean cycling holidays, this particular trip took us from the Atlantic Coast to the Med in 6 days of lumpy-bumpy riding.

The total ride distance was 420 miles, with numerous big cols to get over, including the Aubisque, Tourmalet, Aspin and Marie Blanque. This really is a must for Pyrenean connoisseurs.

We numbered 7 Border City Wheelers, being (apart from myself) Paul, Paul, Paul, Mike, Ian, and Cal, and we were joined by 8 other cyclists from across the globe. It was a great group, and a great week. Below are a few photos taken as we huffed and puffed our way across the mountains.

Day 1

The team assembled on the Atlantic coast, near Biarritz. The tide was out so we decided not to dip our toes!

Mike displays exhibit A, after his 4th puncture. Time for a new wheel. And we've only done 10 miles!

Every cyclists nightmare. The peloton is split by these errant cows on the run in to the lunch cafe

Day 2

We're headed up there next, says Cal. High Pyrenees here we come

On the summit of the Aubisque enjoying the scenery

Me on the summit of the Aubisque, ready (??) for the wet, foggy descent to the Soulor. Why are we doing this?

Paul shows the way when it comes to carbo-loading. It is the Tourmalet tomorrow, after all

Day 3

Freezing and wet on the Tourmalet. Must be summer

How very true! Poignant sign on the ascent of the Col d'Aspin. It's still raining

Day 4

Sunshine at last. Ian, myself, Paul W, Mike and Cal with Canadian Tim outside Pyractif base at Bertren

Me enjoying the great views on the ascent of the Col des Ares. Now this is what we signed up for!

Ian helps Calum with yet another puncture. I suspect it was just an excuse for a rest after Cal blew up on the mountains

Me at the summit of the Col de Port, ahead of a wonderful descent of some 19km.

Day 5

Riding up the Gorges de St Georges, before the heated climb of the Col de Jau. Fantastic scenery, inspiring even

Day 6

The peloton in full flight, we can smell the Mediterranean air by now. Just 60km to go. Cal and Kentish Ian lead the way.

The Med at last. A wonderful feeling. The team are (from L) Tim, Paul K, Paul W, Cal, Murray, me, Mike, Paul G, Ian, Rebecca and Penny, Richard is seated.

Thanks guys, for a great trip
